I used to be a pizza snob and after treacherous years in Philadelphia with their craptastic pizza I have broadened my horizons and drastically lowered my expectations and pizza standards. So while on Vaca in Chicago with my Philadelphia people I have decided to trust their instincts and recommendations and eat a deep dish “pizza”. We went to Giordano’s in Lakeview and waited for our pizza to bake? cook? I don’t know but it took about 45 minutes. While waiting we munched on salads, had drinks and ate a basket of fried stuff. From what I remember it was supposed to be fried calamari but there was a variety of other random fried things in this basket. Regardless, it was delicious. The pizza…I mean deep dish finally came out and it was awesome. We ordered two for about 10 hungry people and questioned the waitress’ judgment, but we could not finish it. It was delicious and I loved it. The cheese and the sauce were just perfect. It was so good. Was it pizza, no I don’t think so, but whatever it was it made me happy.
Now, I am sure there are a variety of Deep Dish Pizza places that are really great in Chicago, but Giordano’s was good and located all over the City. The employees there were also pretty awesome, considering we just came from a Phillies, Cubbies game and 99% of us were in Phillies gear. (Now I know you can guess the 1%). So when you are visiting I suggest Giordano’s – check out their website http://giordanos.com for locations and menus! Oh yeah and I have decided to call this food just “deep dish” that made the most sense.
